The original Godzilla is getting a SDCC exclusive collectible figure. TOHO announced recently that the iconic kaiju will be coming to San Diego Comic-Con for the first time next month. Fans can expect movie props, one of the actual Godzilla suits, giveaways, and more.

The year 2019 marks the 65th anniversary of the Godzilla series. In the 1954 classic, a giant irradiated dinosaur ravaged Japan before being destroyed by a special weapon called the Oxygen Destroyer. Of course, the story did not end there. Another Godzilla rose from the depths one year later and did battle with another giant monster. From there, Godzilla would star in 33 more films. His most recent cinematic outing, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, released in May. Although the film didn’t receive glowing reviews from a number of critics, many fans appreciated how director Michael Dougherty adapted Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan. The film will be followed by Godzilla vs. Kong in March, 2020. On the other side of the Pacific, TOHO seems to be having big plans for the Japanese series after the upcoming MonsterVerse film.

TOHO has announced one of its SDCC exclusive Godzilla products. To celebrate the monster’s 65 year reign, a deluxe vinyl figure based on Godzilla’s 1954 design will be available to purchase at TOHO’s booth. Priced at $30, the figure will be available in limited quantities each day of Comic-Con. According to TOHO, the figure is 6.5 inches tall, and features “accurate sculpting in a limited edition translucent flake vinyl with added paint treatments for enhanced realism. " Collectors will be happy to know that the figure comes in a window box. Check out pictures below.

Those who purchase Godzilla collectibles may recognize this figure. It appears to actually be a repainted version of the Bandai America Godzilla 1954 figure that has been available for some years now. The main differences of course is the more impressive paint, and the display box. Interestingly, it is being sold under the label, “Godzilla Legends,” perhaps implying that there will be more figures. TOHO will have other SDCC exclusive Godzilla products, but these have not been revealed.

Godzilla is no stranger to receiving repainted collectibles for Comic-Con. At San Diego in 2012, there was the “Comic-Con Explosion” S.H. Monsterarts figure, and in 2014 during New York Comic-Con, the monster got a repaint of the Bandai America 2014 figure. As collectors know, these have since shot up in price in the aftermarket. So, if fans have any interest at all in the 2019 exclusive, it would be best to pick one up at TOHO’s booth at Comic-Con.
