Clark Gregg has high praise for his co-star, Brie Larson, about her performance in the upcoming Captain Marvel. Set for a May 2019 release date, the film stars Larson as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who eventually takes on the mantle Captain Marvel. Her character was first alluded to at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) calls on her as he watches the grim outcome of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) plan. Captain Marvel is set to play a major part in next year’s Avengers 4 in addition to her upcoming solo film.

Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is the first MCU film since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger that won’t take place in the present day. A 1990s setting does explain why Fury uses a ’90s-era pager to contact her. Along with Fury, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Korath (Djimon Hounsou), and everyone’s favorite wise-cracking SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will be showing up as well. Captain Marvel will also mark Coulson’s return the big-screen since he was killed by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in 2012’s The Avengers. Although he was later resurrected for ABC’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., the MCU films tend to ignore their small-screen counterparts.

Talking to PeopleTV, Clark Gregg says that he’s having “a blast” filming Captain Marvel before talking about how proud he is to work on the first MCU movie with a female superhero in the title role. When asked about working with Larson, Gregg said “She’s killing this role.” He also pointed out that it’s not first time he’s worked with Larson. The two had previously starred together in 2006’s Hoot when Larson was only 15 years old. “I’m so proud of her. She’s become, I think, one of our best actresses,” Gregg said of his co-star.

Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has promised that Captain Marvel will give viewers a “unique” origin story for Danvers, but also says that he can’t elaborate as to why it’s set in the ’90s without spoiling the plot. Setting Captain Marvel 20+ years in the past does give Marvel some wiggle room to explain why a potentially game-changing MCU character has been absent until now.

Additionally, with the appearance of Kree leader Ronan the Accuser, along with a possible hint dropped in Infinity War, it looks like Captain Marvel will heavily focus on the Kree-Skrull war, as was previously confirmed. In doing so, Marvel could use Captain Marvel to set up for more cosmic-oriented storylines for the MCU. After all, as more and more heroes are introduced to the MCU, Earth will start to seem a little crowded after a while.

Until then, there has been some speculation about how the MCU films will address the fact that Thanos has wiped out half the sentient beings in the universe. This year’s third Marvel movie, Ant-Man And The Wasp, will take place just prior to the events of Infinity War. However, it’s anyone’s guess how the MCU’s numerous TV properties will deal with the fallout from Thanos’ actions. If they choose to do so at all.
