Christmas Crafts To Make And Sell

As we draw closer to the festive season, people are always looking for cute additions to their homes. Since Covid hit, most of us prefer to support small, local businesses. Let’s look at what you can make and how you can sell it.

What Are You Good At, And What Do You Enjoy?

Before you start crafting, you need to decide where to focus. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. If you knit or sew, try and find something you can do with that.  If you like to work with your hands, carving or creating something three dimensional may be the way to go.  Perhaps painting and calligraphy is more up your street.  Remember, don’t try and do too much.  Stick with what you know, and turn it into something people want to buy.

Depending on your setup at home, and your skills, there are a few popular Christmas crafts options to make and sell. These are not the only options, merely some ideas.

Maybe there is something in your neighborhood people particularly want. It might be doing some research to find out.

How Do You Make Money?

First, you have to work out the cheapest way to make good quality merchandise, and decide how much the item is going to cost you to make. If you are making a Christmas stocking for example, you would have to price the wool/ fabric, the needles, buttons or any other additions you’re planning to use to make it.  Then you have to add your time.  How many hours is it going to take to make one? Put a price on that too.

Now, you need to make a profit.  So, it is going to cost you a certain amount of money to make a Christmas stocking, and, you need to make money.  So, look at adding a percentage of the cost on top of the amount it takes to make the item.  Do some research on the cost to purchase similar items and find a way to make your prices competitive.

How To Sell Your Items

If you’re going to put in all this work, you need to make sure people know about it, so they can buy it. You need to market your wares.  Again, there are many options available to do this.

Social Media.   You can create an account on Instagram, Pinterest, or a Facebook page showing off your creations.   Make sure you keep it up to date and visually appealing.   Make some demo items and take some really lovely pictures.   Add prices, and contact details so it’s easy for people to place orders.   Look at local groups in the area you can join. An online store.   Using Shopify or Squarespace, for example, you can sell your goods thorough and online platform.   These cost money though, and having an account may have to be factored in to your pricing.   Local Markets.   Do some research on markets in your area and how much it would cost to rent a stall.   Consider how accessible these markets are and how many people are usually there over a weekend.   Think about what else you would have to have, or buy, to set up a stall and make it appealing for customers to come over and look at your products.   Don’t be shy to approach friends and family with your products.   They may well prefer to buy from someone they know.   If not, they will refer you to their friends and family members.

Don’t Forget To Have Fun

People can see the love and enjoyment that goes into your craftsmanship.  Keep at it with enthusiasm and good spirits.  Enjoy what you do, and potential customers will respond to your positive attitude and the quality of your work.  Customers should leave with a sense of joy over buying what you have created.  Go and have some Christmas Fun!
