In an interview with Bloomberg confirming that Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale will play Steve Jobs in the forthcoming biopic, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said that there wasn’t even a need for an audition …
There was, he said, only a meeting.
“We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range and that’s Chris Bale,” Sorkin told Bloomberg Television’s Emily Chang on a coming edition of “Studio 1.0.” “He didn’t have to audition.”
Bale had previously been the first choice of David Fincher, who was originally set to direct the movie before being replaced by Danny Boyle over “aggressive demands for compensation and control.” It was confirmed earlier this month that Bale was in talks to play the role. “The role is an extremely difficult role. He has more words to say in this movie than most people have in three movies combined,” Sorkin said. “There isn’t a scene or frame that he’s not in, and there’s a tremendous amount of language.”
Unlike the earlier biopic which followed the life of Steve Jobs from his student days to the launch of the iPod in 2001, Sorkin’s screenplay comprises just three, 30-minute backstage scenes leading up to three keynote presentations.
