Chris Hemsworth hasn’t seen a Thor: Love & Thunder script yet, but says filming will get started around of the middle of 2020. Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe concluded this year, bringing the stories of Iron Man and Captain America to a close with it. Save for Hulk, though, their fellow Phase 1 Avengers are already set to return for more in Phase 4. 2020’s Black Widow will explore an untold chapter from Natasha Romanoff’s life prior to her death, followed by new solo adventures for Hawkeye and Thor.

While Hawkeye will costar in his own Disney+ series opposite Kate Bishop in 2021, the God of Thunder will return to the big screen in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder. The sequel is being written and directed by Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi, and will further reunite Hemsworth’s Thor with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Now, Hemsworth has offered a brief, but nevertheless helpful update on when fans can expect to learn more about the film.

Speaking at Tokyo Comic Con (via Comic Book.com), Hemsworth revealed he hasn’t seen the Thor: Love & Thunder script yet before adding “I know they’re working very hard on it and pretty excited to bring you something pretty fresh and new again. But having left Endgame, where Thor was, we have a lot of room to move there and drastically change again, which is very, very exciting”. He then confirmed the plan is to start filming Love & Thunder by the middle of 2020, well ahead of its November 2021 release date.

Back in August, it was reported Waititi had finished the Love & Thunder script and had an eye on starting production by early 2020. However, Hemsworth’s comments suggest the film might not be as far along as previously reported, considering he hasn’t even looked at a script yet. Waititi indicated as much just last month, saying Marvel hadn’t decided yet when Love & Thunder picks up after Avengers: Endgame (and, in turn, if Thor is still fat at the beginning of the movie or has returned to his chiseled physique when the plot gets started). That’s not to say there’s reason for concern, of course; Love & Thunder is still almost two years away from hitting theaters, so there’s no rush.

Love & Thunder’s relatively slower than expected progress may have something to do with Waititi and his schedule. The filmmaker is currently in production on his true story sports comedy-drama, Next Goal Wins, and didn’t officially add the movie to his to-do list until a few months ago. It appears he realized he had enough time to make Next Goal Wins before Love & Thunder and is smartly keeping his attention focused on the former, before returning to the MCU. Waititi seems to have the next Thor film’s story planned out already anyway, so all that needs doing now is figuring out the finer details (like, again, how soon Love & Thunder picks up after Endgame). Still, Hemsworth’s update is welcome, and it lets fans know when they should expect to learn something more concrete about Thor: Love & Thunder.
