SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame ahead

Captain America actor Chris Evans shares an image from the Avengers: Endgame set in which he’s mid-transformation to becoming old Steve Rogers. Evans debuted as Steve Rogers aka. Captain America in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and has since become a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He lead his own trilogy of movies, the last of which, Captain America: Civil War, was essentially an Avengers movie since many MCU stars appeared. Evans also starred in all four of the franchise’s team-up films, from 2012’s The Avengers to this year’s Avengers: Endgame.

However, Avengers: Endgame gave Captain America’s story an ending. After returning all the Infinity Stones to their rightful places in the timeline, Steve returned to the 1940s and ended up marrying Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). When Steve reunites with his friends Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in the present, he’s an old man. Steve gifts the Captain America shield to Sam so that the mantle can live on. Though fans may have wondered who plays old Captain America in this scene, it’s still Evans. Now the actor has revealed a photo of what he looked like mid-transformation.

On Twitter, Evans posted an image of himself in the old Captain America makeup with the caption, “Halfway there.” As previously revealed by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the whole old Captain America look was achieved through practical makeup and prosthetics along with CGI to further age Steve Rogers and polish the final appearance. Check out the mid-transformation Evans in the photo below.

Evans’ Captain America has had quite the character arc in the MCU, starting off as a scrawny kid from Brooklyn who was always willing to take on bullies, to a soldier ready to retire from fighting and live a quiet life with his wife. Since the release of Avengers: Endgame, fans have debated whether the film’s ending for Steve Rogers was fully earned. Nevertheless, old Captain America isn’t just likely to be Steve Rogers’ final scene, it’s also Evans’ last appearance. The actor has been vocal in the past about his reluctance to sign on to his Marvel contract, and Evans said in 2014 Avengers 4 would be his last MCU movie.

As such, it’s unlikely Evans will return to the MCU, at least insofar as reprising the role of Steve Rogers - barring a surprise appearance in the Dinsey+ TV show Falcon and Winter Soldier. Having Evans portray old Captain America cements the ending of Steve Rogers’ story in the MCU and sends the actor off in a unique way. Since the Avengers: Endgame spoiler ban lifted, the cast have taken the opportunity to share behind the scenes images and videos. This latest photo from Evans offers fans a behind the scenes glimpse at how Steve Rogers’ - and his - final scene came together in Avengers: Endgame.
