After cursing on stage at a recent comic convention, Captain America actor Chris Evans reprimanded himself in true Cap fashion. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, is a man originally from the 1940s when people did not curse in public and superheroes did their best to set an example for kids.

Evans first stepped into the role for Captain America: The First Avenger, although news of his casting had some Marvel fans shaking their heads, especially considering his role as the Human Torch in Fantastic Four. After images from the set of The First Avenger began appearing online, though, fans started to admit that maybe they were wrong. Evans’ performance in that movie won over even his most harshest of critics, and he forever became known as Captain America both on and offscreen. During his time on film in the MCU, he created many memorable moments with his fellow Avengers in later films. Some of those moments involve other Avengers cursing, to which Steve always responded with a simple warning: “Language.”

In a video clip posted by capsheroes on Twitter, Evans appears onstage at ACE Comic Con in Seattle when he catches himself dropping the F-bomb. Just as Steve might do, he lowers his head in shame and says his famous catchphrase: “Language.” The audience responded with nothing but love and cheers for the actor, though.

In 2018, Evans announced that the fourth Avengers film (later titled Endgame) would be his last as Captain America in the MCU. At the end of that movie, Steve went back in time to live out his life with Peggy Carter and met up with the Avengers in the current timeline as an old man so that he could hand over his shield to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon. It was one of a series of heart-wrenching moments for Marvel fans, and also one they won’t soon forget. However, rumors suggest that Evans hasn’t ruled out a return to the MCU in a different role: as a director for several episodes of Marvel programming on Disney+.

This video highlights why it is so hard for fans to let go of Evans as Captain America. He embodied the character in so many ways, and it’s evident that portraying Steve Rogers had a significant impact on his life. Every time he utters a curse word, he’ll probably fondly remember Steve and at least think to himself, “Language.” Captain America may be gone from Evans’ life, but he is hardly forgotten.
