Chris Evans leaves the door open for a return as Captain America (or, at least, Steve Rogers) after Avengers 4. Fans around the world are bracing for heartbreak now that Marvel Studios is finally bringing Thanos (Josh Brolin) to the forefront. While Avengers: Infinity War is sure to jam-packed with fun and spectacle the MCU, the Avengers’ newest threat isn’t going to mess around. Everyone from Kevin Feige to the Russo brothers - with the writers and even Robert Downey Jr. joining in - have said to be prepared for some major deaths.

One of the biggest candidates to meet his end is Steve Rogers (formerly Captain America and now the Nomad). The biggest reason behind the swell of fans who believe this is coming is thanks to Evans saying that Avengers 4 would be his last MCU movie. However, that’s just due to his contract apparently and the star is now leaving the door open to a possible return.

GMA spoke to Chris Evans as he does his part to promote Avengers: Infinity War. They asked him about those remarks and him preparing to exit the franchise. Instead of keeping with that line of thinking, Evans almost appears to be taken aback by this assumption, and clears things up from a contractual point of view before teasing that he isn’t completely out just yet.

Evans has had a very rocky road when it comes to discussing his future with the MCU. At times he’s made a point to say he wants to do other things like directing (or the Broadway play he’s currently doing). On other occasions he’ll say he can’t imagine not being a part of the MCU and wants to play Captain America for several more years. There are also instances where he brings up the contract (like now) to point to his obligation being done, and putting the focus back on Marvel to see if they’ll re-up his deal or not.

“Well, the contracts done. A lot of our contracts are through. Myself, [Robert] Downey, [Chris] Hemsworth, we all kind of started roughly at the same time. I mean, I think we all through Avengers 4 kind of wrap it up. But at this point I don’t know what’s next, but yeah by 2019 that’s it… Well, we’ll see.”

If these next two Avengers films are the last of Evans’ run, it looks like he’s going out on a high note. Cap has been one of Marvel’s best characters (and is arguably the face of the franchise at this point), and Evans has had the opportunity to explore him through a great arc at the hands of the Infinity War team. The writers behind his journey told us that he’s Steve Rogers is going to face truths he’s not prepared for in this next movie.

But, if Cap makes it out alive (or stays in the past to be with Peggy Carter as some have theorized), it’d be foolish to think Evans would never come back in some capacity. Whether he transitions to the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., simply retires and returns years later as an older Cap, or finds a renewed sense of heroism, there is the potential for Steve Rogers to carry on. After all, Infinity War’s writers don’t want Bucky to become Cap anyways, so why not keep Evans around for as long as possible?
