Chris Evan repeatedly jokes about the possibility that Steve Rogers/Captain America might die in Avengers: Endgame. Entering the MCU in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, the actor has reprised the role six more times (excluding cameos in Ant-Man’s post-credit scene and Spider-Man: Homecoming) with his seventh and final outing tipped for next month. Over the course of the last eight years, fans have seen the character evolve from a devoted soldier to a rogue agent who confidently squared off with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Now, he and his fellow Avengers are up for potentially their most important mission yet as they try to restore peace and order in the galaxy following the Mad Titan’s snap which wiped out half of the universe.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Endgame’s plot is tightly under wraps with Disney running an extremely measured marketing scheme for the film. Based on what’s been revealed thus far, however, Cap will be at the forefront of the battle against Thanos, which is only fitting considering he was cast aside in Infinity War. Him back in his leadership role may not exactly be a a good sign for fans. As the full Avengers: Endgame trailer emphasized, they’ll take down Thanos “whatever it takes,” meaning if Cap gets a shot at defeating the villain and avenging the world, he’ll undoubtedly take it, even if that means he’ll die.

While his fans are anxiously waiting to learn about his fate in Endgame, Evans is taking the whole situation rather lightly. Speaking with THR, the actor repeatedly joked about Cap dying. Admitting to having seen the first hour of the movie, he jokingly told the outlet that he dies “by Tony’s hand.” Toward the end of the interview, as he showers the film with compliments, he revealed he “choked up like three times,”  and the interviewer asked if it was because of seeing Steve’s death play out on the big screen. “It’s hard. Seeing my own death. It’s going to be a long movie, that’s for sure. The first edit clocked in over three hours. My funeral’s like an hour,” he joked in response.

It’s hard to gauge Cap’s fate based on Evans’ remarks. Over the last few months, there have been conflicting reports about his Marvel stint. His contract finishes with Endgame, plus he sent out an emotional tweet seemingly bidding the character goodbye (though he later clarified that doesn’t confirm Captain America’s death), but Joe Russo came out to say that “he’s not done yet” with the role. Whether that means he’ll continue playing the role on the big screen or just still be attached to it in other forms is unknown. But with Marvel Studios producing a slew of TV shows for Disney Plus, there’s definitely other avenues that Evans can continue being involved with his superhero character or the MCU as a whole.

That said, it’s difficult to dismiss the possibility that Cap will survive the events of Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios needs to have stakes in the Phase 3 capper to make this whole arc all worthwhile, otherwise, it will feel like a cop-out. And the only way to do that is actually see genuine losses in the MCU. Feige did say that the film will be the final chapter for some, if not all founding heroes of the franchise. Aside from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Cap’s death is arguably the one that would have the biggest impact in the franchise.
