Chivalry 2 is announced at the E3 2019 PC Gaming Show. The knight-based combat title follows on from the acclaimed first entry Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, but this time it’s coming back with horses in tow. What’s more, it will be coming in 2020 - albeit with exclusivity to the Epic Games Store.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare has its origins in a mod of Half-Life 2, which swapped out the gunplay of the core game for close combat in a medieval setting. Eventually, though, the project was able to break free and become its own beast with a full release in 2013. Before long, it also moved over from PC into the home console market as well.

As such, it was always hoped that developer Torn Banner Studios would be able to put together a sequel at some point in the future, and it turns out that the studio will be doing so in coordination with Tripwire. Players will be able to ride a horse for the first time in 64-player battles, with the game launching in early 2020. E3 2019 has proved to be the perfect place for the game to be revealed, as per the trailer below.

There is one issue that players might be worry about, however. As part of the reveal, it was confirmed that Chivalry 2 would be coming first to the Epic Games Store. Epic’s aggressive strategy in the PC market has proved controversial for many, with the choice of being able to choose between different storefronts being lost as Epic hunts after timed exclusivity for PC.

Should players accept that the game will need to be picked up first via the Epic Games Store - with the game set to remain there for 12 months - then users will then apparently get a game that promises to set a new standard for medieval combat. As a matter of fact, the developer suggested that the game may be able to recreate the likes of the Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones, which would definitely be an enticing gaming experience. Should Torn Banner Studios reach this goal, then it’s likely that Chivalry 2 could set just as good a marker in the ground as the original.

To do that, however, Chivalry 2 will need to beat out the hugely popular Mordhau, which has made a big impression recently in PC gaming. After all, with such a niche experience as medieval warfare, is there enough space in the market for both?
