Dance pro from Dancing with the Stars, Cheryl Burke reveals in her blog that she thinks contestants need to stop trying to prove themselves. She thinks that the show needs to feel more authentic because the celebrity dancers need to stop feeling on the defensive.

Longtime Dancing with the Stars dance pro, Cheryl Burke was denied her chance to win a third Mirror Ball trophy when she and her partner, ex-Baltimore Ravens player Ray Lewis, left the competition after suffering a foot injury. Burke made it clear that she’d like to remain on the show as a mentor to the other contestants.

Following Monday’s finale which crowned Hannah Brown winner of Dancing with the Stars season 28, Burke sat down with Us Weekly to blog about her experience and shed some light on James Van Der Beek’s harsh elimination after his wife’s tragic miscarriage of his sixth child. Upon his leaving, Van Der Beek made a comment about how Dancing with the Stars has some “soul searching” to do. Burke commented on his remark, saying she understands why he said that because “what they did to him was harsh.” Burke explained that she thinks that the show does need more authenticity, writing, “I think just the world we’re living in right now, there’s no grounding. People need to actually talk from their hearts and instead, people are on the defense constantly.”

The three-time Dancing with the Stars pro said that she thinks that the celebrity dancers need to be less defensive and just be who they are, writing, “People are always trying to prove themselves when really you need to just be yourself and be authentic and whatever that is to you.” Burke went as far as saying that she thinks that is “what the show is missing.” She continued, “It’s not authentic to what the show is anymore, which is a ballroom show.”

It seems that all Burke is asking for is the contestants to get on the dance floor with their hearts open and just be themselves. It is easy for contestants to get caught up in the thinking that winning the competition could mean boosting their career in a different direction instead of just looking at the opportunity as just what it is, a chance to show off their dancing skills in front of America. Still, it seems that Van Der Beek nailed it on the head when he said that the show has some “soul searching” to do. Fans will have to see if the tide will change and the authenticity of the show will return or if Dancing with the Stars has evolved into something else entirely.
