As if Chucky wasn’t bad enough both as a human and a doll, the novelization of Child’s Play 2 reveals that he actually killed his own mother. Before becoming a murderous toy, Chucky was of course a human serial killer named Charles Lee Ray, dubbed The Lakeshore Strangler by the police. As the Child’s Play franchise has gone on, more and more has been revealed about Chucky’s human past, such as his love affair with girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), and unhealthy obsession with Sarah Pierce....

There were already 42M iPhones in use on China Mobile‘s network even before Apple’s anticipated deal with the carrier to offer the handset officially, claims Chinese site SinaTech. 42 million is a huge number, especially when you consider that none of them were subsidised: all had to have been purchased at full price. If true, you can see why the potential for subsidised handsets in China is massive … Of course, it’s as yet an unsupported claim, but it’s not impossible when you consider that the figure is for all generations of iPhone....

China Mobile, the country’s largest wireless operator, confirmed today that it had “reached consensus” with Apple related to support for their fourth-generation TD-LTE radio technology in future iPhones. The carrier’s chairman Wang Jianzhou told MarketWatch that his company will begin commercial trials of the 4G TD-LTE technology next year, but refused to provide a time-frame for a possible 4G LTE iPhone launch in the country. Interestingly, the executive said his company has detected some four million iPhone ownersrs on its network even though only China Unicom is officially carrying the handset in the country....

A pandemic-induced worldwide chip shortage is continuing to hit iPhone 12 production, despite Apple’s advantages in negotiating priority with many of its suppliers. So far, the company has been affected by shortages of both power management chips and LiDAR components – and there are fears that the situation could get a lot worse. The automotive industry has been particularly badly hit, with lack of semiconductors resulting in an estimated $61B in lost sales....

Google this week announced the beta release of Chrome 94, the next update to Google’s desktop web browser. In addition to general improvements, the update also adds support for the new WebGPU API, which comes to replace WebGL and can even access Apple’s Metal API. As described by Google in a blog post, WebGPU is a new, more advanced graphics API for the web that is able to access GPU hardware, resulting in better performance for rendering interfaces in websites and web apps....

Google has just issued a big update to its Chrome app for iPhone and iPad that brings new “interoperability with other Google Apps” and a number of other notable features. That means that you’ll now be able to open all links for YouTube, Maps, Google+ and Drive in their native apps instead of in the browser. You’ll also now be able to access the apps with a single tap from within Chrome....

According to a new Bloomberg report, the Democratic representative expects an overhaul of antitrust laws, which promote fair competition to the benefit of consumers. Cicilline said in an interview that these giant companies have a “deeply disturbing” behavior when it comes to dealing with competition, and for that reason, he wants Congress to change the law. Cicilline’s committee led a high-profile investigation for over a year into technology giants, but he refuses to detail what the recommendations are that will be proposed to change the antitrust laws....

Well, apparently, an AI startup company in China is doing something similar although this time, it is using for the sake of recognizing people with higher temperature (aka fever), a common symptom of COVID-19, a pandemic that has spread across 199+ countries affecting more than 650K people at the time of writing this....

A series of recent reports have all pointed to relatively strong Chinese iPhone sales within an overall declining market. The latest one echoes this, stating that Apple’s most expensive models have achieved the greatest growth, up 147% year-on-year. The market intelligence data shows an interesting split in sales by price level … A declining market Smartphone sales in China have been declining for some time, with a recent official government report predicting that shipments would this year fall to the lowest level in a decade....

Interdimensional travel may have just been confirmed for Avengers: Endgame thanks to Chris Evans. The final film of Phase 3 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only a week away from hitting theaters, and so far Marvel Studios has done all they can to keep plot details under wraps. This has not made it easy on fans to know what they can expect to see, but there have been some subtle clues along the way, including during filming....

I wrote an opinion piece on Friday outlining the five reasons I believe Apple, not Bloomberg, about the Chinese spy chip story. Since then, four further reasons to believe Apple have emerged … First, GCHQ – the UK equivalent of the NSA – issued a statement later the same day saying it had no reason to doubt Apple’s denial. Second, the Department of Homeland Security yesterday echoed this stance. Both organizations are, of course, perfectly willing to bend the truth if they believe it necessary in the interests of national security....

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet movie logo teases another brain melting plot. The 49-year-old English director has become synonymous over the years with highly detailed (and some would argue sometimes convoluted) film plots, the likes of which have garnered him a dedicating following and often huge box office success. Two years ago, Nolan stepped away from his signature sci-fi/action-adventure style to bring audiences the tale of Dunkirk, a World War II era retelling of Britain’s efforts to rescue thousands of allied soldiers who were surrounded by the German army on a beach in occupied France....

Civil rights organizations have expressed strong support for Apple’s resistance to a court order instructing it to create special firmware that would allow the FBI to break into an iPhone – with tech companies doing the same, albeit in a weaker fashion. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) posted a statement in which it said that it applauded Apple for standing up for the rights of its customers, and would be making its views known to the court....

While Apple has long resisted the idea of a touchscreen Mac, a clever solution from a group of developers gives an existing Mac touchscreen capabilities. The proof of concept is called “Project Sistine” and is based on $1 worth of hardware… Developed by Anish Athalye, Kevin Kwok, Guillermo Webster, and Logan Engstrom, the solution requires a small mirror, rigid paper plate, door hinge, and hot glue. All of these parts are then assembled, a process which the team says takes just a few minutes, and put on the top of the Mac near the camera....

It was a particularly dramatic year for the team, so let’s recap the finale of Chicago Med season 3. Chicago Med is one part of Dick Wolf’s sprawling Chicago franchise, which also includes hit shows like Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. The only installment of the franchise to date to not prove a success was Chicago Justice, starring Philip Winchester (Strike Back) and Carl Weathers, which was canceled after one season....

The Child’s Play end credits tease a return to form for Chucky. In the original 1988 film, Brad Dourif voiced the knife-wielding villain, with voodoo allowing the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray to inhabit a Good Guys doll. For the 2019 Child’s Play remake, Mark Hamill voices Chucky and provides a more subtle performance as the rogue Buddi doll. By the end, though, his menacing interpretation of the Buddi theme song suggests the inevitable sequel will feature an out of control Chucky....

Los Angeles has brought a lawsuit against The Weather Channel alleging that the app “deceptively collected, shared and profited from the location information of millions of American consumers.” This news comes from The New York Times after it published an expose last month about apps that threaten privacy with their location data practices. The Weather Channel was named in last months NYT report about apps that send user location data to as many as 40 third-party companies....
