Transit navigation app CityMapper has come up with an interesting monetization strategy that could save its users money: a discounted weekly travel pass … Wired reports that the idea is being piloted in London, initially with just a few thousand people. Charles ‘Chuck’ Thacker, lead designer of the Xerox Alto (below), has died at the age of 74, reports Communications. The Alto, launched in 1973, was the first ever computer based on a graphical user interface and controlled by a mouse, and was one of the inspirations behind Apple’s Lisa and Macintosh computers … Thacker said in 2010 that the falling price of RAM was key to enabling them to build a GUI-based computer....

French site NWE claims to have found photos of a finished production model of the casing of the 4.7-inch version of the iPhone 6, shown in gray. While not revealing anything new about the overall design of the phone, it does appear to give a much clearer view of how the antenna breaks are handled, with a significantly more subtle appearance than had been suggested by some earlier leaked parts, mockups and renders – as seen in the photo below … Breaks are needed in an all-metal casing to allow the transmission of radio signals, and there’s been a lot of concern about the aesthetics of these based on versions with either white or black lines....

Pundits have been predicting for several successive quarters that iPhone sales in China would outstrip those in the U.S., and Q2 2015 was when it finally happened, reports Reuters. Tim Cook said that the iPhone was responsible for the bulk of Apple’s revenue in China, though he did also note that Mac sales were “unbelievable,” up 31% year-on-year. Chrome OS is a Linux kernel-based operating system developed by Google. It’s taken from the Chromium OS which is free software and the Chrome OS uses the same interface of the Google Chrome web browser interface. Then Google has added Android app support for the light-weight Chrome OS to run Android apps on bigger devices as well. In late 2019, Google has introduced the Chrome OS 80 for Developers and now it arrives as a beta....

Sideshow has unveiled its new life-sized K-2SO figure from the Star Wars anthology film Rogue One at San Diego Comic Con 2017. The lovable re-programmed Imperial Security Droid and sidekick to rebel pilot Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) acted as the sarcastic comic relief in the film, similar to other droids in the Star Wars universe like CP30 and R2-D2 from the original and prequel trilogy and BB-8 from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi....

Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina promotes the actors who play Nick Scratch and Theo Putnam, Gavin Leatherwood Lachlan Watson respectively, to series regulars. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) said on Monday that Hytera Communications Corp “recruited and hired Motorola Solutions employees and directed them to take proprietary and trade secret information from Motorola without authorization.” According to the indictment, unsealed in the Northern District of Illinois, Motorola and Hytera both moved from the sale of analog mobile radios (walkie-talkies) to digital mobile radios (“DMRs”) after a 2004 announcement by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that vendors must make the shift by 2013....
